WHAT IS EMDR? EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences. The mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma. When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound. If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. EMDR therapy demonstrates a similar sequence of events. The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health. If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering. Once the block is removed, healing resumes. Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, I can help clients activate their natural healing processes. If you are interested in these services please let me know and we can discuss what to expect and embark upon this journey.
GRIEF AND LOSS
Have you experienced loss? Sometimes we only associate grief to the loss of loved ones through death, but this is not the only type of loss that we need to grieve. Grief is a normal process that many of us resist due to not having the knowledge or the tools to walk through it alone or lean on those around us. Have you experienced divorce, break ups, grown apart from a friend, or had a traumatic childhood then you will need to grieve these losses or you will experience the effects. Let me help you walk through your grief in a healthy way so that you begin to feel the full range of your emotions again.
Do you or a loved one struggle with inattention, hyperactivity and/or impulsivity? If these symptoms are negatively impacting your academic and/or occupational activities then you may meet criteria for this diagnosis. Some symptoms of hyperactivity/impulsivity include; fidgety, can’t stay in your seat, restless, excessively talking, interrupting others, or can’t wait your turn. Sometimes these symptoms have been going on for so long we just think it is who we are when actually it is not. Let me help you learn how to manage these symptoms to succeed in school and/or in your career.
Are you engaged to be married, then you might benefit from 6-8 sessions discussing and learning about some common marital issues that will arise and require compromise, honesty and negotiation. Many couples assume these issues will just work themselves out in time or not be a problem. Most often this is not the case. These issues will require both people to evaluate their beliefs and desires and communicate them to their fiance or the marriage will suffer through repeated conflict, which if left unresolved will lead to resentment. If interested in this type of counseling please contact me to schedule your first session and discuss which topics you would benefit from learning about.
Are you in a dating relationship and finding it challenging? Whether you have been dating for a short time or for a long time all relationships can benefit from learning a few things. Most of us are not experts at conflict resolution and experience unpleasant emotions and thoughts when conflict arises. You might even try to avoid conflict believing this is the best solution. Unfortunately avoiding conflict will lead to more problems eventually. But it is not easy to venture into uncharted territory if we have no idea what we are doing. Let me help you to learn how to embrace conflict, find resolution, and communicate in effective ways to improve your relationship.
Are you questioning your faith, struggling in your walk, or just feeling stuck? If so let me help you identify, process and learn how to grow through this challenge. Some grow up going to church but not having a relationship with the Lord. Some have father wounds from their biological father which are interfering with their ability to see God as a Father. Some know God through religion, rules and demands and have not ever seen God as Love. If we have distortions in how we see God or relate to Him then our spiritual journey will be negatively impacted and we can stop growing and become stagnant. If we have trauma that we have gone through often our prayers for healing can feel like they are hitting a wall and God does not care or love us enough to help. Let me help you process your trauma, address your distortions and learn how to believe right about God so that you feel His Love that never fails and has never failed and begin to experience joy and contentment which is HIS will for all of His sons and daughters.
Do you feel sad, empty, hopeless or irritable? You might be struggling with a depressive disorder. Sadness is normal but sometimes our sadness has surpassed normal levels and we do not realize it and/or we do not want to admit it. If you are struggling to find pleasure in life more often than not, if you are feeling disinterested in activities, if you have forgotten what it feels like to have fun, this is an indicator that you might need help. Depression can also impact your sleep, your appetite, your energy levels and your concentration. Let me help you discover the root, uncover distorted thoughts that are negatively impacting you and teach you to find joy in your life again.
Are you finding that you do not always know what to do as a parent? Well the reality is parenting does not come with a handbook. Most of the time we will either do what was done to us or swing in the complete opposite direction to try and parent the exact opposite of how we were parented. Sometimes we feel like it will just come naturally or we will just figure it out along the way. What we do not realize is we can be causing damage and trauma to our children because we do not have accurate information about child development, boundaries, natural consequences and the effects of inappropriate or harsh discipline. Soon our children are acting out, misbehaving, not listening and we have no idea why. After this phase if we have not sought help to address the parenting issues our children will begin to experience mood disorders, rebellion, and even addiction. Let me help you learn how to be the best parent you can be to raise happy, functional, well adjusted children.
Have you experienced a traumatic or stressful event in your lifetime? Going through difficult things can be confusing when they happen in childhood because we do not know how to handle stressful, scary, confusing things as children. Often we will experience trauma on either large or small scales and life just keeps going on. Sometimes symptoms and behaviors will present immediately; like nightmares, feelings scared, or wetting the bed. Sometimes we will not experience symptoms until much later in life and this can be very confusing. Trauma causes all humans initially to feel distressed. Some of us learn to detach or disassociate from our feelings to survive. The reality is unless you deal with your trauma you will experience its effects either in your health, in your mental health, or in your relationships. If you have experienced trauma let me help you process these events using EMDR to bring relief, stability, and hope into your life, your relationships and your health.

Marriage is one of the hardest and most rewarding things we can embark upon. Whether you are facing minor challenges or on the verge of divorce gaining skills to navigate the marriage relationship is valuable. If you are feeling stuck, hopeless, or even lost you are not alone. Most of us did not grow up in homes where the marriage relationship was role modeled well so we are lacking the map, the information and the skills to handle the problems that we face in marriage. Gaining knowledge and discussing how to apply this knowledge in practical ways to grow and change can benefit every marriage in my opinion. If you are struggling in your marriage it’s not too late, call now and schedule an appointment and begin your journey to a happy, healthy marriage.
